Rally Against Solitary Confinement

In December Governor Christie vetoed a bill that would have dramatically reduced the use of solitary confinement. This bill was introduced by Senator Lesniak and Assemblywoman Pinkin, but much of the enthusiasm behind the effort was driven by an interfaith and activist coalition called NJ-CAIC (Coalition for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement). My congregation has been well represented there. I was not surprised at the Governor's veto, but I was appalled by the uninformed, bullying, accompanying statement the Governor made. If he had thoughtful reasons for denying the legislation, that is one thing. All he had to offer, however, was inaccuracy, dismissiveness and claims of political motivation on the part of those concerned about solitary.

If you want real information, and if you want to speak out against the veto, and in favor of continuing our march forward toward ending this old-school practice, join us in Trenton on Wednesday at noon. Peace, Seth
